Vermont Cake Smash Photography

If you’re considering a Vermont cake smash photography session, I completely understand why. When your baby turns one, it feels different. It’s not just another milestone, it’s a full year of your life, too.

It’s a year of learning your child while also learning an entirely new version of yourself as a parent. A year filled with long nights, early mornings, routines you swore you’d never have, and tiny moments of joy.

And somewhere along the way, your itty-bitty newborn turns into a little person with opinions, expressions, preferences, and a personality that’s completely their own.

That’s what I think cake smash sessions are really about. Not just the cake or the photos themselves, but taking a moment to pause and acknowledge everything this year held: the growth, the exhaustion, the joy, the tears, and the deep love woven through all of it.

If you’re considering a cake smash session, here’s everything you need to know, so that you can keep things simple, relaxed, and true to your family.

What Is a Cake Smash Session (and What It Isn’t)

Let’s start here because cake smash sessions have a bit of a reputation. Mine are not overly themed or packed with props.

Instead, I approach them the same way I do all of my work: with a focus on connection, simplicity, and real moments.

Yes, there’s a cake. Yes, your baby will make a mess. But, the goal isn’t perfection or performance.

It’s curiosity. It’s the small details. It’s those in-between expressions: the hesitation, the excitement, the what is this?

We usually start with a few simple, clean portraits before the cake comes out, giving you a mix of images that feel both timeless and playful.

Why Book a Cake Smash Session?

Because this stage is fleeting in a way that sneaks up on you. They’re not quite a baby anymore… but not quite a toddler either.

They’re on the edge of something new.

A cake smash session captures:

  • Those chubby hands and wobbly balance
  • The way they light up when they recognize you
  • The tiny details that are already starting to change

It’s less about the “smash”…and more about remembering who they were at one.

When Should We Schedule?

Most cake smash sessions are scheduled around your baby’s first birthday, either just before or just after.

If you’re hoping to have images ready for a party or invitations, I recommend scheduling the session about 3–4 weeks in advance. That gives us time for editing and delivery without feeling rushed.

What to Wear

Just like with my newborn sessions, the goal is simple: keep the focus on your baby, not the outfit.

For baby: A simple outfit (or two) works best: think rompers, bloomers, soft dresses, overalls or even just a diaper cover. Neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep things timeless.

For parents: Keep it relaxed and coordinated. Soft, neutral colors without bold patterns or logos. Nothing too fussy, just something that feels like you.

And yes! You can absolutely jump in for a few photos. I always recommend it.

What About the Cake?

Simple is best.

A small cake with neutral frosting tends to photograph beautifully and keeps the focus where it belongs.

Avoid overly bright colors, especially red and purple, which can stain or heavy decorations that can feel distracting (and sometimes a little overwhelming for little ones).

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to give suggestions.

What to Expect During the Session

These sessions are baby-led. Always.

Some babies dive right in. Some take their time. Some want absolutely nothing to do with the cake!

All of it is okay.

We move at their pace, follow their lead, and keep the environment relaxed so they feel comfortable exploring. There’s no pressure for a “perfect smash.”

Some of the best images come from:

  • Tiny fingers picking at frosting
  • Big curious eyes
  • The moment they decide crawling away is more interesting

It’s all part of the story.

A Note on the Mess

It will get messy.

That’s part of the fun but also, I try to keep it manageable. I keep setups simple and easy to clean, and we can absolutely plan for a quick wipe-down or outfit change afterward.

No stress, no chaos – just enough mess to make it memorable.
